Ivan Smith

Based locally in Belper, Ivan was awarded the Henry Moore Fellowship in Sculpture at the University of Derby in 2001, and has recently worked alongside Indian artist Chintan Upadhyay developing an international profile for Sandarbh Residency Programme. He exhibits work predominately abroad, in Budapest, Belgium, Taiwan and India, and for Wirksworth  creates ‘Webbing’, covering a series of pieces of street furniture in a spider’s web of bungee ties for a period of a day each.

This interference within the urban setting re-identifies the aesthetics and function of street furniture, forcing viewers to reassess their view of their surroundings, how it functions and their responsibilities to it. The work exists in two forms; an ephemeral sculptural intervention in the urban landscape, and as a photographic realisation of the time based interventions.
