Young Curators 2010

Young Curators WeHEARTArt

At this weeks young curators meeting we had decided to make an instant installation. Since the weather has suddenly turned we were forced to do this in the Festival office. First of all we had to think of an idea and while many of us played joyously with the bubble wrap we soon decided a bin would be involved in our installation. We first of all stuffed the bin with interesting rubbish but found out this looked to much like... rubbish, and thought it needed to be more abstract. We then set about making this abstract load of rubbish which came out with wonderful results. So now all you need to do is have a peek through the Festival office window to see 'This is Rubbish' our very own instant installation! And luckily for you we have more instant installations planned.

PARTY! Come and celebrate our 10th birthday!!
Walsall Art Gallery trip

We all really enjoyed going to the art gallery.  It was very good and there were lots of fine pieces of art.  We especially liked the room full of balloons because it was fun, but more importantly it was interactive.  We also liked the room full of balls made of sunglasses.  I liked it because it was different and some of the colour combinations were nice.  However, we think that it should be made interactive (we weren't allowed to touch it)  In my opinion the gallery was great!

A core group of seven Young Curators have been meeting regularly since Festival 09, they call their group WhArt. Artists Sally Lemsford and Sarah Bradnock are working with the group, helping them to develop their understanding of curation and bring their ideas to fruition. The group have been given a fantastic opportunity to work as members of the Festival team. They are developing a whole range of skills. including learning to:

  • work together as a team
  • come up with ideas
  • make funding application
  • plan what needs to happen and when
  • plan a budget breakdown of the project
  • develop curatorial understanding

They have spent time thinking about suitable venues and what they think other young people would like to see.

Once they know the outcome of their funding bids they will put a brief forward for artists to respond to. The Young Curators will lead the selection process and organise the whole event.

This work will continue to be supported by Sally and Sarah and the Festival team. There will be opportunities for other young people to get involved and we look forward seeing how this work develops, its impact on the Festival and continued input from young people in the future.

One of the young currators (Orin McQuirk has developed a website link for the group http://weheartart.webs.com/

We will keep you informed on the development of Young Curators' journey. If you are between 12yrs-18yrs and would like to get involved
