Explore and learn about our ancient market town… follow the trail here and wander the ginnels and streets of Wirksworth.  There is also an option to explore further afield by car and visit The National Stone Centre and Black Rocks on the High Peak Trail.

Provides both the casual visitor and serious researcher an understanding of the life of this small town and of its history. The information point is currently manned by volunteers so should be open every Friday and Saturday and Bank Holiday/Festival Sundays.

This 21st century stone circle and celestial amphitheatre created by Wirksworth’s own Aidan Shingler, inspires, entertains, engages and educates. It is constructed from black and silver granite with carvings of a star chart that mirrors the northern hemisphere’s night sky. It is a community asset, educational resource and performance space. Events run throughout the year as well as during the Festival. Keep an eye out for up and coming events here.

Go back in time and travel along the beautiful and unspoilt Ecclesbourne Valley on heritage diesel trains between Wirksworth and Duffield, a 9 mile stretch of line. There is a small museum at the station open daily. Information on timetables and facilities are available here.

Explore Cromford Mill part of the acclaimed Derwent Valley Mills world heritage site. Cromford Mills is located only 2 miles to the north of Wirksworth and makes a lovely walk from Wirksworth or a short bus or car ride away. There is a museum, shops and cafés at Cromford Mills. It is also worth visiting Cromford village a beautiful and historic village and a wonderful location to potter and take in the shops, eateries and gift shops. Don’t miss the world-renowned Scarthin book-shop…. book-shops don’t get much better than this.

For a fun family day out, visit Matlock Bath and the surrounding area where you can experience the ‘Heights of Abraham’ accessible by cable car or road. Take in the stunning views then go underground to explore the spectacular cavern system. Gulliver’s Kingdom, is nearby, a theme park for 3 -13 year olds offering hours of fun and enjoyment. Back in Matlock Bath visit the aquarium and photographic museum and then wander along the side of the River Derwent taking in the cafés, shops and amusement arcades. Two miles to the west of Wirksworth lies Carsington Water – a mecca for watersports, walking, cycling and bird watching. The visitors centre has shopping, eateries and you can hire bikes, watersports equipment and book sailing lessons. Car parking is available at three locations around the reservoir.
