Internationally renowned artist and Wirksworth resident Denis O’Connor will be taking on this year’s Curated Exhibition.
As a sculptor, Denis’ works in a variety of public and studio based contexts. He has undertaken a number of commissions, residencies and exhibitions, some of which have enabled him to create work for both urban and rural sites in both the public and private sectors.
A great supporter of the Festival, Denis has been involved over previous years as an exhibitor and a curator. If you are in Wirksworth, you can see some of his work around the National Stone Centre, to the north of the town. These three towers were created by Denis over three years, each with contrasting influences but developed to reflect the changing journey that these grand symbols of the English mill industry have gone through, slowly ebbing away to become heritage artefacts.
Denis has produced commissioned works for The Royal Mail, J. Sainsbury’s, Asda, The National Stone Centre, Cork Corporation, Derby City Council, The National Building Association Of Ireland, West Meath County Council amongst others. Residences have included working with the National Trust, Jaguar Cars and The National Sculpture Factory. He has exhibited at The City Gallery, Leicester, West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen, The Sirus Arts Centre, Cobh and Limerick City Art Gallery.
