Exactly 100 years ago, compulsory conscription was brought in at the height of WW1. My family were caught up in this catastrophe and at least 5 suffered as Conscientious Objectors. I am currently exploring their lives and honouring these brave men in my artwork. They were damned by the press, treated with contempt by most and often just misunderstood. I use found items (e.g. boxes, fabric, wood); photographs, canvas, and print – collaged, painted and/or stitched, to emphasize and, literally, piece together their lives. I call this body of work ‘Men of Peace’.
