Within my practice I use various MacGuffins to gear the process of making towards certain objectives so that the meaning and aesthetics of the final objects are allowed, to some degree, to arise organically. These MacGuffins are primarily (though not exclusively) functional although as MacGuffins they need not be explicit within the finished objects  and nor need they be particularly serious –  within my practice the phrase “it aint what you do but the way that you do it” could be seen as a guiding principle. Any audience is best advised to act as an archaeologist would, treating the objects on display as physical artefacts that have arisen from my practice and attempting to simultaneously piece together information about both them and the situation within which they were produced so that certain ideas may emerge – these may or may not bear some relationship to those that arouse during the objects production.
