I make paintings and drawings that challenge the pictorial conventions of landscape art.
Quarrying and mining, including lead mining around Wirksworth, are the subject of reflections on histories of human labour often hidden from searchers of the spectacular and picturesque in scenery. The toil involved in winning rare minerals used in modern technology is an ongoing concern. My work invites quiet contemplation. Recent exhibitions have included the Jerwood Drawing Prize (2000,2005,2017), ‘Contemporary Masters from Britain’ at Yantai Art Museum & Jiangsu Art Gallery, Nanjing (2017-2018), ‘Made in Britain: 82 Painters of the 21st Century’, National Museum, Gdansk, Poland (2019).
