These preparatory studies are part of a larger body of work made during my residency in Derbyshire as the seventh winner of the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award. Each painting is connected to the story of a leading woman in the history of Derbyshire. They are made from photographs and drawings, film stills and archival material. Often the protagonist is absent and the scene is set to tell something of their story, or to prompt a new one. The exhibition, ’Dear Reader,’ will open on 16th September at the Derby Museum and Gallery and run until 19th November.
