Festival: 2015

My recent body of work has developed from the idea of Beauty and the Beast, the relationship and juxtaposition of a solitary female figure and a variety of ‘beasts’ or creatures. Moths and butterflies are seen as symbols of metamorphosis and hope by some, but trigger more frightening, phobic reactions in others. Geese can bring associations of storytelling and magic but are also aggressive in nature and capable of attack. The paintings hint at the question of the beast within that shows it’s self in the shadows. The compositions are simple and striking and feature women with insects, birds or wild animals, painted with a fairly dark palette that gives a contemplative atmosphere and symbolic weight to the subjects.
