Michael Cook

Festival: 2015

My work links with many themes in British Neo-Romanticism; wandering figures on long journeys, aspects of nature as metaphors for human joy and sorrow, animal and human figures expressive of mystery and spiritual longing. Stylistically there are diverse influences, from various modernist painters, to the graphic art of the early 20th century, to medieval art and icons. My interest in art as a spiritual discipline – for both the artist and the viewer – has led to individual pieces and whole sequences which seek to engage with overtly theological narratives, texts and themes, though usually in oblique or ambiguous ways.
