In the thirteenth century, in a field by my house in the Peak District, someone left a hoard of precious silver coins. 750 years later it was unearthed by a metal detectorist. It was a fortune. Why were they there ? Did the owner secretly hide them, intending to return – and if so, what happened ? Was the owner running away and terrified, desperately looking for a hiding place ? Were they stolen? Were they simply dropped and lost, an agonising misfortune ? These photographs have been made close to the sites of the discovery of caches of treasure in Derbyshire.
