Rachel Hathaway

Festival: 2019

I create bright and colourful paintings inspired by the surrounding area of my home in Wirksworth. I paint the animals and landscape I see around me, and try to capture the moment and my feelings through my use of colour. I have recently taken inspiration from the inquisitive highland cattle at Middleton Top, the glimpses of hares I see on my way to Kirk Ireton, and many other magnificent sights in this beautiful landscape. I work from sketches and photographs, and work primarily in acrylics, using my memory of the colours and patterns in my work. I try to capture the expression and character of the animals I paint, and often use simple backgrounds to emphasise this.
