Simon Sneath

Festival: 2022

My work is strongly influenced by a visit to Japan in 1997. In particular the lanterns of Nara, the Ryoanji gardens and Mashiko with its kilns and potteries provided the motivation for my ceramic interpretations of Japanese traditional forms.

I have always been drawn to monumental and architectural forms. For example, a catenary arch forms the base for my interpretation of the famous stone lantern of Kenroku-en. I am currently combining different clays and materials to create tall, textured, multi-section constructions, each portraying a particular theme.
