The Horizon/Line Series started after a visit to a hypnotist, during my post-operative care after a major operation. She asked me if I had made any drawings or images about the experience and immediately, the image that came to mind was very simple. It was a brilliantly coloured horizontal line in a coloured ground. Later, in France on frequent visits to the coast at St. Pair just south of Granville, I was struck by the sight of a brilliant light on the far horizon of the sea, an electric edge often just at the point where the sea met the sky or sometimes below it; a brilliant luminescent edge or line of light. These experiences merged together in a series of studies from the coasts of France, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and paintings that developed out of them, that explore the perception of phenomena common to all if we observe them.
